WORKING GIRL

Transform your gifts and magic into a killer business bio that gets noticed and sparks connections.
An online business event led by Inger Kenobi
IMG_0599.JPG
When I quit my job at the Norwegian Embassy in London (see photo above), Grandma was horrified and said, 'What will I tell people when they ask me what you do?'

Being able to say, 'Inger is the Ambassador's private secretary!' rolled off her tongue. Saying, 'Inger has. . . eh. . . quit her job to write a book,' filled her with dread.

I get it.

ANSWERING THE QUESTION, 'WHAT DO YOU DO?' IS ENOUGH TO MAKE MOST OF US REACH FOR THE BETA BLOCKERS.

- Especially if the answer isn't cut and dry like, 'I'm a dog groomer.'
- Especially if you're multi-talented.
- Especially if you're not exactly a raving success at the moment, so talking about your work makes you feel uncomfortable.
- Especially if your gifts and talents are hard to condense into a pithy answer.

And to be honest, I think 'What do you do?' is a super lame question.
It is overused, uninteresting, and a sure shortcut to boring everyone to death. It's also a brilliant conversation-ender, especially if your answer happens to be, 'I'm a life coach.'

And it's a stupid question because:

Your magic can't be reduced to a single sentence.
Your talent can't always be presented in a neat little box.
Your work isn't for everyone.

At the same time. . . . . . . it is nice to be able to talk (and write) about what you do without feeling uncomfortable and anxious. Ideally, you should be able to express what you do without getting into that gnarly explaining energy.

Because if you can't express what you do, you can wave goodbye to:

  • pitching yourself to be a speaker at your dream events
  • asking people to collaborate
  • promoting yourself with ease and joy
  • connecting with your intended audience
  • talking about what you do with confidence and joy

So if you dread the question, 'What do you do?', this workshop will feel like a dream come true.

It will shave weeks, maybe months off your progress. Neato!
You'll go from feeling like this . . .

. . . To this!

Imagine these epic wins:

Imagine being at a party and someone asks you, 'So, what do you do?' Instead of gulping down your wine and looking for the nearest exit, the words roll off your tongue and you land a six-figure contract. (Happened to a client of mine.)

Or imagine someone coming across your ABOUT ME page where you have written that one of your favorite TV shows is Gilmore Girls. Based on that fact alone they hire you. (That actually happened to me.)

Picture wanting to be a guest on the podcast you listen to obsessively every week, and because you have such an awesome bio already written up, firing off an email and pitching yourself is a breeze.

THIS WILL BE THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE OF COPY YOU'LL EVER WRITE.

Your bio is how you introduce yourself to the world and it's your opportunity to make a fantastic first impression.

Because you ARE fantastic.

You're great at your job, you have so much to offer, and it's time to express that with flair and confidence.

Not just in writing.
But face to face as well.

Alright, alright, alright! | All the practicalities.

WHEN

We'll meet on September 12th and 13th at 6 pm UK time for 90 minutes. (For you USA people, that's Noon Central Time.)

WHERE

We'll meet on Zoom, so as long as you have internet, location is not a problem!

If you can't be there live, you'll be thrilled to know that the sessions will be recorded and sent straight to your inbox.

LENGTH

This kick-ass event will span over two days, so there will be plenty of time to practice what you learn, act on your many 'aha!' moments, and receive guidance and feedback.

WIN. WIN. WIN
Not only will you learn writing tools that will take your bios from forgettable to remarkable, but we'll also make our business bios POP with Hollywood scriptwriting techniques. If it's good enough for Shona Rhymes, it's good enough for us!
PRICE
All this goodness for only 50 pounds (yay!). (approx 65 dollars).
Is it time to kiss bland business bios goodbye?

Hi! I'm Inger Kenobi. People often have a hard time distilling their gifts and talents into words. I don't. I am an expert at helping entrepreneurs express what they do in a way that makes their dream clients go, 'It's like you're inside my head!'

But don't just take my word for it. Here are some examples:

Instead of saying, 'I help people become more visible,' they say, 'I help people get on TV.' Instead of saying, 'I'm a beauty technician,' they say, 'I help women of all ages love their faces without Botox and fillers.' Instead of saying, 'I'm a witch and sacred healer,' they say, 'I cure insomnia with herbs and meditation.'

Can you spot the pattern? These people have gone from vague to specific. From stating their title to highlighting results. Can't wait to see what you do with this!

Before you sign up, let me throw a few things out there:

- No one writes a great first draft

- Even if you haaaaaate writing about yourself and talking about your work, you'll be able to rock out a great bio that will make you go, 'Hey! Who knew this could be so much fun!'

- Be prepared to showcase your personality and get specific about what you do. The golden rule is: people should understand within 5 seconds what you do and who your work is for. Sounds impossible? Not anymore!

-Even better, your work should be so crystal clear that it's either a HELL NO, or a OMG! WHEN CAN I SIGN UP? Vague words make you invisible. Clear copy turns you into a magnet.

- Lastly, I know I'm harping about the words, but let's not forget about the VIBE. The vibe behind the writing is the real magic. When you come from a place that is totally YOU, instead of looking around to see how others are doing it or worrying about not being professional enough, you will realize that all the thoughts in your head are GOLD. Let me repeat that: you are sitting in a giant lump of gold. Let's put it to good use.

Client love:

-I really liked how you gave me real hands-on help. I was actually learning and getting better at a skill in real time rather than just talking about it and never have the ability to implement it on my own.

-That was so fun!!! I don’t know why, but I felt like I was giggling the entire time.

-This was awesome!

-This was incredibly helpful!

- Thanks so much for being so informative and inspiring. I learned more than I bargained for.

Some common questions.

What do you think is the biggest mistake people make when talking about their work?
Time and time again I meet vibrant, funny, multi-dimensional people with sleeve tattoos and a wicket sense of humor, but when it comes to writing or talking about their work, it's like their personality shuts down and some bland robot takes over. So to answer your question, not being themselves is the biggest mistake. Too much jargon. Too much watering themselves down. Too much sounding like everyone else.

Why is it so important to have a good bio?
I think of it as an act of kindness. You're being kind to your clients because now they know what you do and why they should hire you. You're being kind to yourself because you'll find it SO MUCH EASIER to promote your work and talk about yourself in new settings. And also, it's just common sense.

What makes a bio irresistible?
Good question! I think it's irresistible when you dare to turn people away. For example, a friend of mine is doing a dark retreat. There will be no windows in the cabin. No light. No contact with other people. No distractions. This place has a two-year waiting list. People who want to do this retreat really want to do it. For other people, this is their worst nightmare. When you dare to be so clear and so specific that you're someone's worst nightmare, bingo!

Why are you so passionate about this?
This might be a huge generalization, but I think most women undersell and undervalue themselves. They don't give themselves great titles. They talk about 'running my little business,' and 'oh, I'm just a freelance journalist.' You are never a JUST. There is nothing little about your business. I think writing a killer business bio and being able to talk about what you do, has the power to bring all your talents, gifts, dreams, and goals into focus.

If I need help with the rest of my copy, can I hire you privately?
Yes! I love working with people one-on-one. Especially entrepreneurs who have outgrown their website and want to put more personality into their copy.
